A true gem to show
off and delight at the time

Our history
The history of Mezcal Saca Espantos began in our childhood. One day while walking down the street, we stumbled upon an event that spooked us very much. When we got to grandma’s house, she performed a cleanse by sprinkling Mezcal with rue grass all over our bodies. She told us that these scares could manifest in illnesses or emotional problems due to an imbalance between the body and the soul, where it is belief that the soul remains in the place of the event. For this reason it was necessary to “Take the espanto Out of Us”, which is a tradition that has always remained in the family and Mezcal is credited with the healing power to return the “soul to the body”.

Therefore Mezcal Saca Espantos is a tribute to the knowledge and traditions of our ancestors in the state of Oaxaca. Those traditional rituals called «Cleanses», which clear bad energies from the body and soul through the use of special herbs, incense, eggs, candles, copal and of course the power of our artisanal mezcal.
Finally, Mezcal Saca Espantos, is a tribute to the tradition of the «Day of the Dead» which is celebrated in Mexico and throughout the state of Oaxaca. In this celebration an offering is prepared for the loved ones who have passed on. Prepared with their favorite foods, Along with mezcal which forms an important part of the «Altar of the Dead» along with black mole, chocolate and the traditional chepil, bean tamales and black mole.
